This site contains a selection of photographs taken between 1970 and the present. (I will be adding a selection of drawings later.) One of my initial inspirations was the light shows and experimental films of the 1960s. I have always been interested in exploring the borders between abstraction and realism and I wanted to see more work that combined these elements, and decided to create some of my own.
Shortly after I started doing photography, I was encountered Minor White’s photography and his dictum to “photograph things for what else they are”. His work showed me new ways to create abstraction in a simple photograph.
I did a lot of multiple image work on color slide film between 1970 and 1990. There is a little of this work in the atmospherics gallery, and I will be adding a broader selection of photographs and a selection of drawings over the next few months.
More recently, I’ve been taking a lot of close-up pictures, and exploring the abstraction created by the tension between the in focus and out of focus parts of the image.
The images are organized into galleries, some by subject matter and some by compositional characteristics. Most were taken within the last couple of years on digital still cameras. There is a sprinkling of earlier film work in some of the galleries.
Prints of any of the images can be purchased - if you would like to purchase a print of an image that does not have prints available online, send me a message and I will make them available.
